VAT : when you pay it

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a tax in almost every purchase made in Italy.
It exists in many countries and in different percentages. Each country has its own rates and possible exemptions.
The seller acts as a "tax collector": he collects the tax on behalf of the state.

In Italy, the basic rate has reached 22 % of the value of the goods purchased.

In online commerce, VAT follows slightly different rules that trade in "physical" commerce: for example, by purchasing online from a country outside the European Union you can purchase without VAT, while a tourist who had to make the same purchase in person in Italy would pay for it.

VAT now constituting a very significant percentage of the final price of a product. In the short scheme below, who should pay for it.

  • Italian private customers
  • Italian professional customers (with VAT Number)
  • private customers inside the European Union
